Abiding Precepts – 2 Nephi 20

Read the full chapter here: 2 Nephi 20

Passage #1

Shall the ax boast itself against him that heweth therewith? Shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself as if it were no wood!

2 Nephi 20:15

Precept #1

Don’t believe that you are in control of God or that you are somehow greater than He is.

Do your prayers reflect a misunderstanding that God is a genie in a bottle or perhaps a vending machine?

Passage #2

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame, and shall burn and shall devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

2 Nephi 20:17

Precept #2

Let Jesus burn the away more prickly parts of who you are.

Are there things about you that you know rub people the wrong way? Have you ever asked the Lord to help you smooth those things out? Do you want Him to? Do you believe you should?

Passage #3

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them, but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

2 Nephi 20:20

Precept #3

Learn how to put your trust in God instead of the people whose decision making directly impacts your life.

Do you trust your supervisor or instructors more than God? Are you aware of God’s whisperings and instructions to you that may differ from theirs? Do you have the courage and faith to act on your promptings even if they don’t line up with what the people around you are saying?

Passage #4

Therefore, thus saith the Lord God of Hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

2 Nephi 20:24

Precept #4

Don’t be afraid of those who use their power to abuse you. God is better than they and has a plan to make you free after strengthening you through hardship.

Is there someone in authority who you resent because of how they treat you? Do you trust the Lord will strengthen you through the experience and one day bring you peace and freedom if you’re patient in Him?
