Abiding Precepts – Jacob 2

Read the full chapter here: Jacob 2

Passage #1

And it supposeth me that they have come up hither to hear the pleasing word of God, yea, the word which healeth the wounded soul.

Jacob 2:8

Precept #1

Let the word of God heal your soul.

When you read or study the scriptures does the Spirit of God sink into your soul and help you feel whole and connected to God again? How about your temple worship – does it heal you too?

Passage #2

And the hand of providence hath smiled upon you most pleasingly, that you have obtained many riches; and because some of you have obtained more abundantly than that of your brethren ye are lifted up in the pride of your hearts, and wear stiff necks and high heads because of the costliness of your apparel, and persecute your brethren because ye suppose that ye are better than they.

And now, my brethren, do ye suppose that God justifieth you in this thing? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. But he condemneth you, and if ye persist in these things his judgments must speedily come unto you. . . .

Think of your brethren like unto yourselves, and be familiar with all and free with your substance, that they may be rich like unto you. . . .

. . . the one being is as precious in his sight as the other. And all flesh is of the dust; and for the selfsame end hath he created them, that they should keep his commandments and glorify him forever.

Jacob 2:13-14, 17, 21

Precept #2

Don’t let riches keep you from being humble before God and others. See everyone as equal to yourself in every circumstance no matter the difference in circumstances.

Do you look down on those who have less than you? Do you look up to and revere those with great wealth simply because they seem to have it together and are successful? Do you hold yourself to the same standard you hold everyone else to and vice versa?

Passage #3

But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God.

And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted.

Jacob 2:18-19

Precept #3

Put God and building His kingdom first in all that you do. Let it be the purpose for all the success and wealth you seek in this life.

How strong are your family relationships? How close to the Lord are each of you individually and collectively? Is He the foundation and source of all you do as a family?

Passage #4

But the word of God burdens me because of your grosser crimes. For behold, thus saith the Lord: This people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David, and Solomon his son.

Jacob 2:23

Precept #4

Don’t use the scriptures to justify poor behavior.

What passages of scripture do you use to convince yourself you have nothing to repent of or change?

Passage #5

For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.

Jacob 2:28

Precept #5

Delight in the chastity of women.

What’s your motivation for the films and shows you watch? How do you feel about the general show of promiscuous behavior consistently – almost ubiquitously – depicted in our entertainment?
