Abiding Precepts – Mosiah 9

Read the full chapter here: Mosiah 9

Passage #1

And yet, I being over-zealous to inherit the land of our fathers, collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land, and started again on our journey into the wilderness to go up to the land; but we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God. . . .

Now it was the cunning and the craftiness of king Laman, to bring my people into bondage, that he yielded up the land that we might possess it.

Mosiah 9:3, 10

Precept #1

Remember the Lord and seek more for what He wants for you than for what you think you want or deserve.

What was the last thing you sought after which you felt you deserved? Is it what the Lord wanted for you? What were the results?

Passage #2

Now they were a lazy and an idolatrous people; therefore they were desirous to bring us into bondage, that they might glut themselves with the labors of our hands; yea, that they might feast themselves upon the flocks of our fields.

Mosiah 9:12

Precept #2

Work hard for your own support. Don’t be lazy or glut yourself on the labor of other people.

Do you seek to take advantage of other people who are hard workers?

Passage #3

Therefore it came to pass that king Laman began to stir up his people that they should contend with my people; therefore there began to be wars and contentions in the land.

Mosiah 9:13

Precept #3

Seek to create peace. Don’t seek to stir up contention with other people.

Do you seek for peace in your relationships with others or do you want to fight?

Passage #4

. . . for I and my people did cry mightily to the Lord that he would deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, for we were awakened to a remembrance of the deliverance of our fathers.

Mosiah 9:17

Precept #4

Cry mightily to the Lord for the strength and aid you stand in need of.

Do you know the difference between regular old prayer and mighty prayer? How does mighty prayer make a difference?

Passage #5

Yea, in the strength of the Lord did we go forth to battle against the Lamanites . . .

And God did hear our cries and did answer our prayers; and we did go forth in his might; yea, we did go forth against the Lamanites, and in one day and a night we did slay three thousand and forty-three; we did slay them even until we had driven them out of our land.

Mosiah 9:17-18

Precept #5

Do all that you attempt to do in the strength of the Lord.

What was the last thing you felt the Lord strengthening you to be able to do? How does it make a difference in your performance when the Lord helps you do your work?
